WASHINGTON – The Senate Judiciary Committee met today to begin a markup of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). “The immigration reform bill remained largely intact and unscathed after the first day of markup. The fact is that though the ‘Gang of Eight’ compromise has flaws, it represents movement in the right direction. RALEIGH, N.C. – To mark this upcoming Mother’s Day, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina is releasing a new video of loving North Carolina families headed by gay or lesbian parents to draw attention to unjust state laws that allow only one parent in an unmarried couple to be their child’s legally recognized guardian.
The video released today features families from Durham, Morrisville, and Wake Forest. Two previous videos profiled families from Greensboro and Asheville.

LINCOLN, Neb. – This week, the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska sent a letter to all county sheriff and local police agencies urging them to refrain from participating in voluntary “immigration detainer” programs citing concerns of constitutional violations. The organization also asserts that these programs are costly to local tax payers.
“Around the country and in Nebraska, we have seen that when the federal government asks a local law enforcement agency to detain someone with no cause, no proof of a crime and, simply a question about immigration status, the outcome is costly to local tax payers and detrimental to human lives,” said ACLU of Nebraska Executive Director Becki Brenner.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska announced today the selection of Joshua Decker to serve as interim executive director, effective May 22, 2013.
ACLU of Alaska President Donna Goldsmith says of Decker, “He brings to the table considerable litigation and organizational skills, clarity of vision, and a deep appreciation for, and commitment to, the bedrock principles found within our state and federal constitutions.
